"The Crisis in the Eurozone: an Extraordinary Event"
Abstract
First the speaker analyzes the fact that the expected collapse of the banking system generated by the panic related to the public debt never happened either before 1914 (gold standard era) or in the first true structural crisis of the capitalist economy (1929). Then the speaker will unravels the roots of the current disaster: both the weird and reactionary ideology embodied into the architecture of the Euro system (a legacy of history) and the institutional structure itself. In the end, he elaborates on what could be done to save the Euro system: a full rejection of the initial structure, a European New-Deal targeting growth, full-employment, restoring the stability conditions.
Dr Alain Parquez is Emeritus Professor of Economics of the University of Franche-Comte, Besancon (France) and was associated with the Economics Department at the University of Ottawa. He has written extensively on monetary policy, crisis theory and economic policy, including articles and books on the impact of austerity measures, which he believes are the cause of world crisis. He is currently writing a book on the General Theory of the Monetary Circuit and its economic policy implications.
