Ismat Quzmar

My name is Ismat Quzmar, I am a Palestinian economics student. I graduated from Birzeit University in 2008, majoring in economics with a minor in political science. For the past year I have been working with a local consulting company on issues within the Palestinian community such as transparency, accountability, integrity “tool-kits” for Local Government Units (LGUs), and most recently I have worked on a study regarding the property tax reform. My education and work experience, in addition to the unique situation me and my people lie under, led me to believe that I need to do something that enables me to take my role as a young Palestinian who devoted his life to serve the cause of his people in ending occupation and building an independent, democratic, Palestinian state. I see the future of Palestinians as a nation and their struggle to build their own independent state is tied tightly to their ability to handle the hardships that face most the periphery states from the centre countries and occupational practices, this requires qualified educated individuals who possess the sufficient knowledge to face such challenges. I am very excited and privileged that I was selected by IUC and extremely eager to meet all my “worldwide” colleagues, professors and IUC staff. IUC was the target destination for me since it has a unique vision which is the aim to contribute to a better world, and I'm sure several interesting and related topics will be addressed during my stay in Turin, which will enable me to widen my horizon and allow me to mature academically and professionally.

Ryan Foley

I graduated from Dartmouth College in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. As an undergraduate I studied the legacies of colonialism in New Zealand where I first developed an interest in international business and the impact of globalization. Since graduation I have been working for the Nielsen Company across three continents: North America (in Chicago), Asia (in Shanghai) and Europe (in Oxford). This has afforded me many opportunities to interact with various cultures and business environments. While working I have continued to be interested in globalization and development and through my travels my interest in this topic has only increased. I look forward to learning more about how the global economy is influenced by laws and financial regulation, and specifically I would like to explore how these regulations impact people and cultures at the local level.
