The Winners of the 2007 Global Jurist Medals

The IUC and Global Jurist  announced the winners of the 2007 Global Jurist Medals. These medals, sponsored by the IUC, are awarded to the best submissions from scholars in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and beyond. The editorial board has selected and will publish the following papers that we feel provide the most valuable critical and innovative perspective on global capitalism.

 Gold Medal (1,500 Euros):

Photo RizalMohammad Rizal Salim and Philip Lawton: “The Law in a Post-colonial State: The Shareholders' Oppression Remedy in Malaysia”.

Mohammad has published on various aspects of company and securities laws. His particular interest is comparative corporate governance. He is also keen in critical comparative law and legal theory. His current projects include co-writing a text on the theoretical, contextual and legal perspectives of corporate governance in Malaysia.
 

Photo Hakeem YusufHakeem O. Yusuf : “The Judiciary and Constitutionalism in Transitions: A Critique”.

Hakeem' s research interests are in the area of transitional justice, human rights, judicial constitutionalism and the rule of law. His specific focus is on judicial accountability in transitions which, he argues, is a relatively neglected aspect of transitional justice theory and state practice. His current research focuses on extending the purview of truth-telling processes to the judiciary in post-authoritarian contexts. He is currently engaged in the evaluation and analysis of the role of judges in troubled societies with the incidence of authoritarianism or dictatorship.
 

Photo Rodrigo MiguezRodrigo Míguez Núñez: “Las Oscilaciones de la Propiedad Colectiva en las Constituciones Andinas”. 

Rodrigo is a jurist formed in Chile, at the Catholic University of Concepción,and became a Lawyer in Chile in2003. He began his PhD. in Civil Law at the University of Turin in 2005. He got the Marie Curie early stage training scholarship in 2006 for a doctorate in history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy of legal cultures in Europe the Europe. His research activity is focused on Comparative Law; particularly on legal transplants of private institutions in the Andean Region. Nowadays he is working on the traditional Property Law system in Bolivia, Peru and Chile.
 

Photo Kamal GadiyevKamal Gadiyev: “Arbitration of Energy-related Disputes under the Energy Charter Treaty”.

Kamal graduated from Masters of International Law and Economics Program from the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern in 2007.
He is a Russian corporate lawyer by background and he regularly advises clients on corporate and energy-related legal issues.  His research interests include investment arbitration especially under the ECT, correlation of the WTO and Bilateral Investment Treaties and energy security issues.
