
Operating under the remit of the International University College of Turin (IUC), the Institute offers a number of research projects, events, and publication opportunities for scholars and graduate/post graduate students to explore the inter-workings of the political, legal and economic conceptions, relationships and traditions that constitute contemporary global governance.

Gunher Teubner is Co-Director of IPEL. Gunther is an IUC Faculty Member, a member of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, Former Otto Kahn Freund Professor of Comparative Law and Legal Theory at the London School of Economics, and Professor of Private Law and Legal Sociology at the University of Frankfurt. Gunther Teubner teaches private law and legal sociology. At present he is Principal Investigator at the Excellence Cluster "Normative Orders" at the Goethe-University Frankfurt. He taught at the European University Institute Florence, Italy, and at the universities of Bremen and Frankfurt. He was Visiting Professor in Berkeley, Ann Arbor, Stanford, Toronto, Berlin, and Den Haag and Maastricht. He received honorary doctorates from the universities Lucerne, Napoli, Tiflis, Macerata, Lund. His research areas are social theory of law, private law theory, contract law, and comparative Law.

Joseph Halevi is an IUC Faculty Member and professor at the department of political economy in University of Sydney and participating in George Soros’s Institute for New Economic Thinking.
Joseph Halevi graduated from the University La Sapienza in Rome with a thesis on Kalecki's business cycles and fiscal policies. He taught then at the New School for Social Research in New York, at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and from 1979 at the University of Sydney. Since then, he has been Research Professor at the Faculty of Statistics of La Sapienza, Visiting Full Professor in Economics and Political Science at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and Visiting Professor at the Universities of Grenoble, Nice, and Amiens. In recent years he has been also invited in Italy by the University of Lecce, Faculty of Philosophy and by the University of Bologna, Faculty of Political Science. Halevi participated in the association of "economia critica" in Spain, and was among the founding group of the Association of Heterodox Economics (UK) where he is still active. He is a member of the editorial committees of Economie appliquée (Paris), Cahiers d'économie politique (Paris), and of International Journal of Political Economy (NY). He has co-edited two books and published single and co-authored essays in several journals and edited volumes. He is a regular contributor to the daily Il manifesto, Rome, where he published so far about 300 articles. His research involves a critical dissection of economic theories, as well as the transformations of the capitalist economies. |

Saki Bailey is Executive Director & Research Fellow of IPEL. Saki is an IUC Faculty Member and Lecturer in Human Rights & International & Foreign Legal Research. She received her Juris Doctor from UC Hastings with an emphasis in International & Comparative Law. In her last year at Hastings she studied Comparative Latin American legal systems and International Trade Policy at the Universidad Católica de la Santissima Concepción, Chile. Her current areas of research are in International Human Rights & Comparative Law. She is currently conducting a Common Core of European Private Law study on “Access to Commons” and is also a general editor of the book together with Ugo Mattei and Filippo Valguarnera. Between 2004-2006, she assisted a study on Access to Justice on behalf of the Academie Internationale Droit Comparé, Paris and from 2008-2010 she was a Visitor of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton. Her work experience includes property, immigration and environmental law in the private sector and immigration law and development work in the government and nonprofit sector. |

Seminar Coordinator

Michele Spanò is the seminar series coordinator at IPEL; he is Research Fellow at the Department of Law at the University of Turin. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ and a Ph.D. in European Legal Cultures at the EHESS in Paris. He has been Agent Chercheur at the CENJ-Yan Thomas at the EHESS in Paris, Visiting Scholar at the Department of Anthropology at Columbia University in New York and Research Fellow at the Italian Institute for Historical Studies in Naples. He is member of the Editorial Board of ‘Politica & Società’ (il Mulino) and he writes for ‘il manifesto’ and ‘L’Indice dei libri del mese’. His research interests include the philosophy of Michel Foucault, governmentality, postcolonial studies and the relationship between legal actions and citizenship. |
