Seminar at the International University College of Turin "Workshop on Creative Thinking for Lawyers" Ms. Miriam Aziz is a lawyer, Visiting Scholar at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, as well as performance artist, composer and musician, filmmaker, Artistic Director at Artist (s) at Large based in Italy and New York. She has taught at universities both in Europe (Edinburgh University; Free University of Berlin; Siena University, Italy) and the United States (Cornell Law School; Saint Louis University Law School; Korbel School of International Studies, Denver University) and spent four years as a post-doctoral research fellow at the European University Institute (EUI), Florence and as a visiting research scholar at New York University; Columbia University Law School and Cardozo Law School, NY). She has been trained as a barrister (Inns of Court School of Law, London) and has worked as a consultant for international law firms (Freshfields/Deringer and Coudert Brothers, Berlin). Miriam has also performed in venues both in Europe and in the United States and has released three studio albums and has made short films (art and commercial). During the three hour workshop, lead by Ms. Miriam Aziz, we will explore the extent to which performance art may provide a creative platform to understand and engage with international law and human rights in theory, practice and education. We shall address questions of statehood, sovereignty, citizenship and identity in the context of a globalized world and whether art may provide a means whereby we may understand how the sites of legal and political authority and political economy are shifting.
