Exhibition “The Third Floor: Free Speech Zone” will be open from May 17th to May 29th.
Ten young artists’ work about freedom of speech and expression will be on show at the International University College of Turin. The exhibition is the result of a project conceived by the artist Simona Castaldo and curated by the cultural Association Arteco and by Francesca Berardi, in collaboration with the International University College of Turin (IUC) and the IUC Student Association (IUCSA).
According to Arteco’s mission, the initiative aims to favour the exchange and dialogue between different realities, giving visibility to the work of the new generations of artists. Moreover, an intention of the project is to create a deeper relation between the city and the IUC, which since 2006 has brought young law, economics and political science students from all over the world to Turin, offering them specialized courses geared towards analyzing and investigating important transnational matters. Ten artists met a group of students to discuss the theme of freedom of speech, a complex and delicate issue, which develops on the common ground between sociopolitical studies and the idea of art as a tool to better the society.
The Third Floor: Free Speech Zone is an attempt to face a topical theme with a self-financed exhibition in which the artists present a series of works created specifically for the occasion, in dialogue with the spaces offered by IUC on the third floor of the venue in Piazza Paleocapa 2. The Third Floor: Free Speech Zoneis born within This is Tomorrow, an Arteco’s project directed to support the artistic research of the emerging generations and to favour the professional growth of young artists and to create a circuit of information that involves a wider audience, not only specialized. The artists: Paolo Berra, Simone Bubbico, Simona Castaldo, Francesco Del Conte, Nicolas Macello, Mattia Macchieraldo, Elisa Nepote, Flavio Palasciano, Roberto Ribet, ZorioIppolito (Anna Ippolito e Marzio Zorio).
The Association Arteco is born in 2010 on the basis of the experiences in the conservation and protection of the charter members' (Fabio Cafagna, Erika Cristina and Beatrice Zanelli) historic-artistic heritage.
IUCSAis a non-profit association of students and former students of theInternational University College of Turin (IUC), all driven by the interest in the promotion of the critical study of the law in a multi-disciplinary approach and global perspective that puts law, economics and finance in connection with each other and with the other social sciences.
The International University College of Turin (IUC) was established in 2006 for the interdisciplinary and comparative study of law, economics and finance, in response to the clear lack of a transnational set of normative principles capable of controlling economic processes. The program specifically looks to engage students and young scholars from all over the world with special emphasis on the periphery, or 'global south', with leading figures in economics, law and the humanities. The IUC also actively fosters a robust research-based agenda, through its Institute for the study of Political Economy and Law (IPEL), seeking innovative collaboration and research by a diverse community of scholars and practitioners.
